Early grape festivals were held in Altus until the late 1920s but eventually the effects of prohibition brought the practice to an end. In 1984, when 12,000 acres in the Altus area received the Federal designation as an official viticulture area, the Altus Grape Festival was revived as an annual celebration to honor and show appreciation for the achievements of the town’s past and present grape growers.
Activities include the grape stomp, games, fresh grapes, homemade jellies and jams made from the local crop, food, music, crafts, street dances, cellar and vineyard tours and tastings. Events take place in the Altus City Park. Find more information on altusgrapefest.com/ or phone 479-468-4684.
