If you happen to be in the Magnolia area May 17-18, the enticing aroma of steak grilling over an open fire is sure to get your attention. Seventy cooking teams compete for $4,000, the Governor’s Cup and tremendous bragging rights during the World Championship Steak Cook-off, part of the 25th annual Magnolia Blossom Festival. More than 3,500, 16-oz. rib-eye steaks will be served to visitors in about 30 minutes. The total prize money is $9,000 with the coveted Governor’s Cup and $4,000 are awarded to the grand prize winner.
A special honor for 2013 is that the cook-off has been selected as an automatic qualifier to the World Food Championships slated for Nov. 1-4 in Las Vegas. The World Food Championships, hosted by Adam Richman star of the Travel Channel’s “Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America” and “Man v. Food:Nation,” is a four-day food festival and competition which features the best of the best squaring off in seven different categories: BBQ, Chili, Burger,Sandwich, Side-dish, a Recipe championship, and a Chef’s category. Each divisional champion then gets an invitation to compete at the Final Table for the ultimate crown and $75,000. In all, $300,000 in cash is up for grabs.
Other activities include the 63rd annual Sidewalk Art Show, crafts, food, a pageant, a parade, and a 5K race and fun run. There will also be live entertainment, activities for children, a fishing tournament, and a car and motorcycle show. The historic downtown square is where all the action takes place.
