50th Anniversary of Horseshoe Bend

Saturday, May 11, 2013

Are you a fan of the American Pickers television show on the History Channel?  You’ll have the opportunity to visit with Danielle Colby during Horseshoe Bend’s annual Dogwood Days, May 11.  In addition to the popular headliner, this year’s event is special since it also serves as the celebration for the 50th anniversary of this Ozark Mountain community.

Danielle keeps everything running smoothly at the Antique Archaeology shop while Mike and Frank are on the road looking for “picking treasures.” She’ll autograph photos and do some “picking” of her own. If you watch the show, you know Danielle spends her time talking to buyers, packing up shipments and keeping Mike and Frank in line, while they entertain her with their antics and jokes. The guys like to say she's the glue that holds them all together.

Other Dogwood Day activities scheduled are a raffle, dog pageant, car show, and a men’s beauty pageant. A Three-Person Scramble at the Golf Course on Turkey Mountain, food vendors, kiddie games and attractions, plant and outdoor exhibit and sale, and entertainment in the gazebo.  This year also marks the return of the annual car and motorcycle show which will be called Wheels in the Bend.

Horseshoe Bend is the only city in Arkansas that includes land from three counties within its city limits. The bulk of the retirement and resort community lies in Izard County, but also extends into Sharp and Fulton counties as well. It was named for a bend in the Strawberry River.

From the beginning, the town was developed as a retirement community. Horseshoe Bend continues to exist as a retirement community and resort. It has two golf courses and several lakes featuring fishing, boating, and other recreational activities. The largest body of water, Crown Lake, covers 640 acres.
