When I travel I enjoy finding the places the locals hang out. Of course, general tourist attractions or restaurants can be great too or they wouldn’t be so known. One of the best ways to find out which of these local or more well-known destinations are the best is to pay attention to Reader’s Choice awards, like the recent one in the January issue of Southern Living.

As an Arkansan, I can tell you that Eureka Spring’s No. 6 listing in the Best Small Towns categories is well deserved. There’s also an article in the December issue of the magazine giving more description of the Victorian town and what there is to do there, particularly in the winter. When you read the list of shops and restaurants be assured that when you go there you’ll be sitting along side locals.

In the Arkansas River Valley, Mount Magazine placed No. 10 in the Best Scenic View category. There’s a new lodge on the mountain at Mount Magazine State Park. All of the rooms have a view, as does the restaurant, indoor swimming pool and cabins flanking it. Arkansans and out of state tourists are both putting this destination on their must-see lists.

Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs ranked No. 9 in Best Public Gardens. That’s three for Arkansas! Of course, we have a lot of other great spots and events that didn’t make the list. Find out more about them at www.Arkansas.com.
