Bird Island Tours at Lake Ouachita State Park

Zoie Clift

Bird Island, located in the middle of Lake Ouachita,
has been named an Important Bird Area (IBA) by the National Audubon Society.
IBAs are places that are important for the conservation of one or more bird
species.  Bird Island hosts 30 to 50 thousand purple martins each night in
late July and early August as well as other migrating birds.  Many who
visit the evening roost are delighted to see several species of egrets, herons,
ibises and other long-legged waders nesting on the small island alongside the
roosting martins.
I had a chance to check out the island last year and
it’s worth a trip. Lake Ouachita State Park schedules evening barge tours
to Bird Island several times each week during July and August. Tickets
for the tour are $9 for adults, $5 for kids 6-12 and free for those under 6.
Reservations are required and space is limited. Contact the park at 501-767-9366
to make reservations.  You may also contact Park Interpreter, Susan
Adkins, by email at

for more details.
