Lake Chicot State Park Hosts Civil War Event on Saturday
This Saturday, June 2, Lake Chicot State Park
in Lake Village
offers a series of lectures and discussions focusing on the Civil War in
The event begins at 8:45 a.m. with “Civil War Writings.” Letters, reports and diaries from the period allow us to understand the personal stories of soldiers. Visitors will also have the chance to see and use the same writing instruments from the Civil War.
Beginning at 10:15, “The Life of Civil War Soldiers” explores the life of Union and Confederate soldiers in Arkansas. Reproduction equipment and uniforms will be on display, allowing attendees to opportunity to see history “come alive.”
“The Battle of Ditch Bayou” begins at 1 p.m. The discussion allows visitors the chance to take an in-depth look into the battle fought in Lake Village on June 6, 1864.
At 2:15 p.m. is “The Battle of Arkansas Post.” The presentation examines the Union assault on Fort Hindman in January 1863 and the effect the battle had on the surrounding area.
Visitors are invited to travel to the other side of Lake Chicot for the 3:30 presentation of “Lakeport Plantation and the Civil War.” The
event includes a guided tour of Lakeport and a discussion of the effect the Civil War had on the plantation.
