Yep, it’s cold outside and there
have been some questions about whether the Thoroughbred horses at Oaklawn are running
tomorrow because of the weather…but good news! Opening day of live racing is
a go for tomorrow ( Jan. 14) in Hot Springs. Entries have been posted to the racetracks website at
. Below are more details on the weekend and the
Saturday (Jan. 15) the
traditional 50-cent Corn Beef Sandwiches are available and on Monday (Jan 17)Martin
Luther King Jr. Day, Zenyatta Bobbleheads will be given away with each paid
admission while supplies last.
Last year, Oaklawn honored
2009 Horse of the Year and Fantasy Stakes winner Rachel Alexandra with a
bobblehead. This year, Zenyatta gets the honor as the track commemorates her
two Apple Blossom Handicap victories. The multiple-champion mare could
potentially earn her own Horse of the Year title when the 2010 Eclipse Awards
are announced later that Monday evening. In her 2010 Apple Blossom win,
Zenyatta matched Cigar and Citation with 16 consecutive victories.
In addition to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Oaklawn hosts a
special Monday card on President’s Day, Feb. 21, which features the $55,000
Progressive Cash Giveaway. The Monday cards will also be highlighted by the
first two races in Oaklawn’s 3-year-old colt and gelding series – the $100,000
Smarty Jones on Jan. 17 and the $250,000 Southwest Stakes on Feb. 21. The
series, which has produced six Triple Crown race winners since 2004, continues
with the $300,000 Rebel Stakes Saturday, March 19 and culminates Saturday,
April 16 with the $1 million, Arkansas Derby.
The regular live racing
schedule will be Thursdays – Sundays. First post is 1:30 p.m. weekdays and Sundays and 1 p.m. Saturdays and holiday Mondays.
