From Friday, August 29 through Sunday, August 31, the skies over mid-town Little Rock will be filled with color…and a lot of hot air…as the Great War Memorial Balloon Race takes place. There will be more than 20 balloons brought from all over the country participating.
There will be food and art merchandise vendors along with activities just for children. Tethered balloon rides will be available, weather permitting. A balloon glow on Friday evening is one of the premier attractions of the event.
Saturday morning brings the first competition flight, followed by the “Race to Emerald City” 5K walk. Special programs for the kids, live music, a frozen tee shirt contest, and all the vendors make-up the daytime events. Evening brings a balloon launch and fly-out, weather permitting, followed by another balloon glow.
The final flight ompetition kicks-off Sunday at 6:30 a.m. A church service with music, vendors offering food and merchandise, the children’s activities such as carnival games and bounce houses are Sunday morning. Clear Channel Radio “Boom Box” music will be on hand as well. The event wraps up at 1 p.m. with the release of helium balloons.
Admission is $5 for adults, ages 12 and younger are free. War Memorial Park is located at 5101 West Markham.
