I have two great reasons for you to eat at 302 On The Square, located in Berryville. Wait, make that three. First, the food is awesome. Every bite bursts with flavor. Second, the price of the food is more than affordable, especially for what you get in quality and quantity. Third, spending your money there will help support the incredibly nice couple that is trying to restore the 1902 Grand View Hotel, where their restaurant is located.
Alexander Virden and Sandra Doss are in the process of restoring the Grand View, a long dormant, cornerstone building on the Berryville square. They have brought the ground floor to life with two eateries. At Royal Sundaes you can get ice cream treats and hotdogs. 302 On The Square is located in the old ballroom and serves Cajun and American cuisine.
I solidly recommend the Avocado BLT and the Roast Beef Pita Wrap (with fresh spinach, tomatoes, red onions, Swiss cheese, and Parmesan Peppercorn dressing). If you really want to treat yourself, you’ll find heaven in the South Carolina Strawberries and Cream (fresh cut strawberries served with a hot biscuit and heavy cream). The brownie comes out warm, moist and iced. Did I mention that every bite bursts with flavor? Mmmmm.
Other items on the menu I’d like to try are: Chicken Salad; Cajun Red Beans and Rice with Andouille Sausage; Louisiana Chicken and Gravy; Knife and Fork Chili Cheese Dog; and the Ginger Oaks Orange Float.
While your taste buds will appreciate you for treating them to these made-from-scratch, labor-of-love dishes, you can also feel good about helping preserve this historical building. Alexander and Sandra are renovating the second and third floor hotel rooms with the fourth floor planned as one large suite. With today’s economy making financing for this type of venture difficult, they need people to come in and eat.
