The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss

Kerry Kraus

The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss
is a rarely seen collection, created over a period of more than 60 years. It encompasses the entirety of Seuss’s multi-dimensional talent. This exhibition, on display through May 22 at the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, offers a glimpse into another aspect of Theodor Seuss Geisel’s artistic life.

The Secret Art shows a side of him that most readers, familiar with him through his classic children’s books, have never seen — wildly imaginative and surreal images. Also in the showing are larger-than-life views of Dr. Seuss’ most famous characters: The Cat in the Hat, The Grinch, Sam I Am, Yertle the Turtle, and The Lorax.

He was an amazing author and illustrator. I am retiring from 36 years of teaching and have been collecting his books all those years. I think I have the whole collection and even lots of multiples. Retirement doesn’t mean I will stop collecting. My books are now retired to my bedroom on special shelves with the Dr. Seuss stuffed animals I’ve started collecting. They will eventually go to my daughter and grandson because she is now a teacher. They have brought myself, my own children, and many young children so much joy over the passed 36 years. I can’t imagine parenting or teaching without his books! May they entertain children and adults for many years to come!!
