This Place Matters: Historic Helena and Johnny Cash Boyhood Home Make Final List

Kimberly J. Williams

Starting today, June 1, the National Trust for Historic Preservation is asking people to cast their vote for their favorite preservation organization or project for the 2011 This Place Matters Community Challenge.

The Arkansas Delta has TWO finalists – historic downtown Helena and the Johnny Cash Boyhood Home in Dyess.

This year’s program started with more than 250 applicants and was cut down to 100 finalists. Three cash prizes will be given to the top vote getters.

Take a moment to vote! Either of the three cash prizes ($25,000; $10,000 or $5,000) could really help these two deserving finalists with preservation efforts.

I would like to see both Historic Helena and the Boyhood Home of Johnny Cash both be eligible for money to preserve facilities for national historical significance.
