This Weekend in the Arkansas Delta!

It’s the first weekend in June…and a perfect time to get out and explore the Arkansas Delta! Here are a few of the great events going on this weekend!

Celebrate Des Arc’s river heritage during the 25th annual Steamboat Days through June 5. This year’s event features live entertainment on Friday and Saturday, a bass tournament, a talent show, a crawfish eating contest, activities just for kids, a car show, arts and crafts, a carnival, and a fireworks display. To learn more, visit www.steamboatdays.net or phone 870-256-5289.

Start summer off with a bang at the 29th annual Portfest Rollin’ on the River Festival in Newport on June 4-5. Held along the banks of the White River at Jacksonport State Park, Portfest’s Friday musical headliner is Blues Traveler. Saturday’s events include a large carnival, activities for children, a bass tournament, and arts and crafts. Country music bands Shenandoah and Little Texas provide the evening’s live music. Saturday night concludes with a fireworks extravaganza. Visit www.NewportARChamber.org or phone 870-523-3618 for more information.

Games were much more than just a playful pastime for Native American children who lived in the area hundreds of years ago. Learn how these children used games to develop survival skills when Hampson Archeological Museum State Park in Wilson hosts a Native Games workshop on June 5. Participants will test their own skills by playing “Twisted Trail” or “Pine Cone Toss.” The class is free, but pre-registration is required. Call Hampson Archeological Museum State Park at 870-655-8622 for details.

June 5 is the date for this year’s Festival on the Ridge in downtown Harrisburg. The morning kicks off with an old-fashioned breakfast served at 7 a.m. The 5K run begins at 8 a.m. Other events throughout the day include demonstrations by a BMX stunt team, a soapbox derby, a crawfish eating contest and a horseshoe tournament. The festival also offers a host of food and craft vendors and games and activities just for kids. Phone 870-931-2790 for more information.

The 2010 Tour de Hoot Bicycle Tour is slated for June 5 in McGehee. The bicycle tour, which benefits the McGehee Boys and Girls Club, offers routes ranging from 25 to 100 miles throughout southeast Arkansas. The event is known for great rest stops and delicious food. Log on to www.TourdeHoot.com or phone 870-222-8410 for all the details.

Join the staff of Lake Chicot State Park in Lake Village for Feeding Time at the Park on June 6. Learn how and what the park’s animals eat and get a chance to watch the critters have their “dinner.” For details contact Lake Chicot State Park at 870-265-5480.

Have a great weekend!

i would like to know if there is group camping. Or do you have to have multiple campsites?

If you’re referring to Crowley’s Ridge State Park, then no, there is no group camping. If you’re wanting to camp during the week, you might be able to get multiple campsites near each other. During the spring/summer weekends, it will be much harder. For more info on camping on our wonderful Arkansas State Parks, you can check out http://www.arkansasstateparks.com/camping-cabins-lodging/camping/.
