Start summer off with a bang at the 29th annual Portfest Rollin’ on the River Festival in Newport on June 4-5. Held along the banks of the White River at Jacksonport State Park, Portfest’s Friday musical headliner is Blues Traveler. Games were much more than just a playful pastime for Native American children who lived in the area hundreds of years ago. Learn how these children used games to develop survival skills when Hampson Archeological Museum State Park in Wilson hosts a Native Games workshop on June 5. Participants will test their own skills by playing “Twisted Trail” or “Pine Cone Toss.” The class is free, but pre-registration is required. June 5 is the date for this year’s Festival on the Ridge in downtown Harrisburg. The morning kicks off with an old-fashioned breakfast served at 7 a.m. The 5K run begins at 8 a.m. Other events throughout the day include demonstrations by a BMX stunt team, a soapbox derby, a crawfish eating contest and a horseshoe tournament.
