In the Arkansas River Valley rich soil gives life to vineyards. In and around the town of Altus, four wineries offer free tours, wine tastings and special events. Visitors to the area can also learn more about the region's coal mining history at the Altus Heritage House Museum and by visiting the Coal Miner's Memorial in the city park. In nearby Paris, Cowie Wine Cellars offers tours and tastings and is home to the Arkansas Historic Wine Museum. Located a few miles off of Interstate 40, Altus is 47 miles from Fort Smith.
