The Mission of the Department of Parks and Tourism is:

  • to provide optimum quality state park recreation facilities conveniently located and in sufficient quantity to meet the needs of all state citizens and visitors;
  • to provide adequate facilities and skilled leadership for developing and safeguarding natural resources;
  • to enhance the economic impact of tourism in the state and increase the state's tax base;
  • to collect, preserve, and make available for public use historical items and resource materials;
  • to provide executive direction and effective administration of fiscal controls, accounting, purchasing, internal audit, personnel management, and public information for all divisions of the Department;
  • to enhance the quality of life for all citizens; and

Benefits

Our Department offers an excellent benefit package including immediate accrual of annual and sick leave, eleven paid holidays, and a contributory retirement plan. Our Department pays the major portion of medical health insurance for full-time employees and offers several medical plans from which to choose. These plans range from an indemnity plan with a PPO option to HMO's.

Other benefits include maternity leave, court and jury duty leave, military leave and a catastrophic illness leave program as well as Family and Medical leave. Employees with our Department may choose to participate in a deferred compensation plan and various options for life insurance, accident insurance, cancer care and intensive care insurance. Employees are also able to participate in the Arkansas Cafeteria Plan which is a program designed to allow an employee to pay for group health and life insurance premiums, dependent day care and out-of-pocket medical care costs tax free. All employees of our Department are also covered under workers' compensation and unemployment insurance.

Park Interpreter (Bull Shoals)

Summary of Duties & Minimum Qualifications:

Pay Grade:    C115

The Park Interpreter is responsible for planning, coordinating, directing, and presenting interpretive programs and special events to park visitors, civic groups, and private organizations. Duties include researching and recording data regarding programs, flora and fauna of the park, organizing and preparing press releases, reports, and brochures, preparing slide presentations, exhibits, and written scripts for audio-visual programs, supervising park operations in the absence of other uniformed personnel, and assisting the superintendent in planning and operations. Other duties include trail walks, boat tours, demonstrations, public relations, conservation and protection of plant and animal life in the park, developing new trails, performing office duties, providing monthly input to the superintendent and program services department, and other duties as assigned. A criminal background check and a driver’s record check will be performed.

This position offers a full benefit package including paid holidays, annual and sick leave, health insurance, and retirement pension. Housing and utilities are provided.

Applicants must meet or exceed the following qualifications: the formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in natural science, communications, parks and recreation management, or a related field, PLUS three months experience in interpretation. Non-qualified applicants need not apply.

Library Technician (History Commission)

This position provides general library services in the Arkansas History Commission’s public research room, including registration and orientation of patrons, and assisting visitors with the selection and use of archival materials such as microfilm, microfiche, books and pamphlets. Other duties include processing and cataloging library and microfilm materials, preparing indexes, performing data entry, making photocopies, maintaining records, assisting patrons with historical and genealogical research, and other duties as assigned. A detail-oriented team player with experience in an archival or museum setting is preferred. Applicant must be able to work Saturdays.

Maintenance Technician (Delta Heritage Trail)

This position is responsible for managing, supervising and conducting the maintenance function of the park’s grounds, equipment and utility systems. This position will directly supervise both full-time and seasonal employees. Job duties include conducting job performance evaluations, coordinating work assignments, and developing an overall park maintenance plan and preventative maintenance program for buildings, grounds and equipment.  Applicant will perform skilled and non-skilled maintenance duties, including basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, cleaning, grounds maintenance, and equipment repairs. This position also maintains equipment history records, supply inventories and other assigned record keeping. Computer skills using Microsoft Office is preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to work a varied schedule, including some weekends and holidays.

Job duties vary but areas include maintenance, construction, housekeeping, store clerks, accounting clerks, waitstaff, cooks, and office/clerical support.

Work hours vary (from 15 up to 40 hours or more per week) as do work schedules (weekdays, weekends, holidays, and evening work).
