The Mission of the Department of Parks and Tourism is:

  • to provide optimum quality state park recreation facilities conveniently located and in sufficient quantity to meet the needs of all state citizens and visitors;

Benefits

Our Department offers an excellent benefit package including immediate accrual of annual and sick leave, eleven paid holidays, and a contributory retirement plan. Our Department pays the major portion of medical health insurance for full-time employees and offers several medical plans from which to choose. These plans range from an indemnity plan with a PPO option to HMO's.

Other benefits include maternity leave, court and jury duty leave, military leave and a catastrophic illness leave program as well as Family and Medical leave. Employees with our Department may choose to participate in a deferred compensation plan and various options for life insurance, accident insurance, cancer care and intensive care insurance. Employees are also able to participate in the Arkansas Cafeteria Plan which is a program designed to allow an employee to pay for group health and life insurance premiums, dependent day care and out-of-pocket medical care costs tax free. All employees of our Department are also covered under workers' compensation and unemployment insurance.

Maintenance Assistant (Logoly)

This position performs general maintenance on park grounds, facilities and equipment. Applicant must have the ability to perform skilled and non-skilled maintenance duties such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, mowing electrical repairs, and trash removal. Job duties include operating hand tools, lawn equipment, tractors, and other tools used for grounds beautification and maintenance. Facility duties include cleaning restrooms, mopping/waxing floors, and cleaning carpets at the Visitor Information Center and bathhouse. Performs other duties as assigned. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to work weekends and holidays.

Travel Consultant

Summary of Duties & Minimum Qualifications:

This position is responsible for greeting visitors entering the center, mapping out routes, and providing travel and tourism information about Arkansas. Other duties include participating in familiarization tours, compiling daily and monthly visitation data and entering it into the computer, stocking and keeping inventory of literature and helping to maintain the cleanliness of the center. Position may attend out-of-state trade shows. The selected candidate must maintain certification to perform adult and child CPR/First Aid (training provided), wear the uniform provided by the department, be able to move up to 50 pounds, and be available to work some weekends and holidays.

Seasonal Park Interpreters

Location: Various Arkansas State Parks Statewide
Hourly Wage: $10.50/hour

Summary of Duties & Minimum Qualifications:
This position presents programs to help park visitors have memorable experiences in state parks and form meaningful connections to the beauty and history of Arkansas. The position will research, promote, and present programs that may include guided walks, amphitheater talks, boat tours, state park-type recreational activities, historic site tours, and/or larger special events in parks, schools, and local communities. The position also assists with park operations duties as assigned.
Approximately 20 positions will be filled at various locations around the state. Positions range in duration from 3 to 9 months. Some begin in March or April; others are summer only. All are considered part time, but employees can expect a 35-40 hour work week during peak visitation season (peak varies by location). Housing is provided at some parks, but is not guaranteed.
 
Valid driver’s license required. Must have physical condition sufficient to work outdoors and sometimes under strenuous conditions. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays. A mandatory, paid 4-day interpretive training class is provided.
 
Minimum qualifications are at least two years of college education in a degree plan majoring in natural science, park interpretation, communications, park administration, history, education, forestry, or a related field. Preferred qualifications are relevant work experience, documented experience in public speaking and writing, coursework in interpretive methods, and a working knowledge of Arkansas natural/cultural history.
 
Interviews with qualified, selected applicants will be held Monday and Tuesday, February 15-16, 2010, at DeGray Lake Resort State Park near Arkadelphia, AR. Interviewees will be notified by February 9. Candidates must be present on one of the above dates from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., as this is an all-day interview/tryout.
