The U.S. Geological Survey is conducting a 5-year study to document the recovery of ground-water resources as a result of implementing surface water in Union County, AR. The project is called the Sparta Aquifer Recovery Study.

  • Since development began in the early 1920s, ground-water level declines of more than 390 feet have occurred in some areas.

  • "Critical Ground-Water Area" designated in 1996 in five counties of southern Arkansas.

  • Local industry, the city of El Dorado, and Union County currently are working to reduce withdrawals from the Sparta aquifer through water reuse and alternative water sources for industry.
