• When Ernest Hemingway's writing studio at Piggott caught fire in 1932, he saved his manuscripts by throwing them out an upstairs window. The building was saved and restored in 1998 as part of the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Education Center.
• Ernest Hemingway wrote portions of his classic novel, "A Farewell to Arms," at his studio in Piggott. He spent time there while married to Pauline Pfeiffer, a Piggott native.
• John H. Johnson, who founded "Jet" and "Ebony" magazines, was born in Arkansas City in Desha County. His boyhood home is now a museum. He was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Clinton in 1996.
• Best-selling author John Grisham was born in Jonesboro and lived in various towns throughout Northeast Arkansas. He returns to his home state on a regular basis for book signings.
• John Gould Fletcher of Little Rock was the first Southern poet to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1939 for Selected Poems. In the 1930s he was considered a literary peer of Pound and Eliot. He was also a respected critic and prose writer.
