White River at DeValls Bluff

At Newport, the White River turns southward across Arkansas's Delta region before joining the Mississippi River in southeast Arkansas. Along the way, it passes historic river towns such as Augusta, Des Arc, Clarendon and St. Charles. Bordering portions of the stream are the Henry Gray/Hurricane Lake, Wattensaw and Trusten Holder state wildlife management areas. Some 90 river miles near the stream's end flows through the White River National Wildlife Refuge, which includes the nation's largest remaining tract of bottomland hardwood forest under a single ownership.

Fishing: Anglers ply the waters of the lower White River and the many small lakes of the White River National Wildlife Refuge in search of bass, catfish, crappie and bream. The lower portion of this famous river has excellent fishing for largemouth bass on its many oxbow lakes.
