Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the plant began operating in 1985 to divert from Lake Chicot, Arkansas’s largest natural lake, silt-laden water that was befouling the lake. The plant is housed in an eight-story-tall building one-and-a-half times the size of a football field. Its pumps can move 6,500 cubic feet of water per second. A visitors center offers an interior view of the plant and contains exhibits detailing the environmental tragedy that befell Lake Chicot and what the Corps did to clean it up. An overlook is located atop the center.
