Petitions Circulate to Turn Two Counties “Wet”

Petition drives are underway in Benton and Madison counties to put liquor initiatives on the November general election ballot.

A group called Keep Dollars in Benton County announced it will try and collect the 40,000 signatures needed. Becoming a wet county would allow package liquor stores to operate within Benton County and would allow for-profit restaurants to seek licenses to serve alcoholic beverages.

A Kingston man is also collecting signatures for a ballot issue on whether to allow packaged alcoholic beverage sales in Madison County, where alcohol sales in any form are prohibited.

Many more counties, including Benton County, don’t have packaged sales but allow alcohol to be served by the drink at private clubs.

In November 2010, voters in Boone and Clark counties chose to allow the sale and manufacture of alcoholic beverages, making 35 of Arkansas’s 75 counties wet.
