Devil's Den State Park - Day Hike Trails

Butterfield Hiking Trail (C-2)

Location: 8 miles south of Fayetteville on I-540 (Exit 53),then 18 miles southwest on Hwy. 170, or 7 miles west of I-540 (Exit 45) at Winslow on Hwy. 74.

Description: The Butterfield Hiking Trail gets its name from the Butterfield Stagecoach which ran in the area between 1858-1861. The Butterfield Trail is one of the few looped backpacking trails in the state. Beginning in Devil's Den State Park near the park's pavilion, the trail crosses Hwy. 74 and passes near Mount Olive. Scenic views, such as Blackburn Creek and Vista Point, are plentiful. Rock formations and mountainous outcroppings provide photographers with dramatic subjects. Backpackers must obtain a free permit at the park office before beginning their hike.

CCC Interpretive Trail (C-2)

Location: 8 miles south of Fayetteville on I-540 (Exit 53) then 18 miles southwest on Hwy. 170, or 7 miles west of I-540 (Exit 45) at Winslow on Hwy. 74

Description: This self-guided trail winds through the main Civilian Conservation Corp camp that was used in construction of the park. A brochure at the Visitor Center will help to interpret the remnants of the camp and give a glimpse into what life was like in the CCC camp.

Devil's Den Self-Guided Trail (C-2) (National Recreation Trail)

Description: The Devil's Den Trail has it all, gravity flow springs, peculiar erosional remnants of sandstone strata, wet weather waterfalls, and lush Ozark plant and animal life. This rocky trail is a perfect example of the rugged Boston Mountain terrain.

Fossil Flats (C-2)

Description: The flat exposed rock in the creek bed lends this trail its name. Many fossils are visible in the exposed creek bed. Along the trail you will see evidence of the CCC and early settlers, creek views, and big rock formations. This trail gives riders a choice of a three, four, or five mile ride and the difficulty increases with each mile added.

Gorley King (C-2)

Location: 8 miles south of Fayetteville on I-540 (Exit 53), then 18 miles southwest on Hwy. 170, or 7 miles west of I-540 (Exit 45) at Winslow on Hwy. 74

Description: This trail follows Holt Ridge as it winds its way around both sides of Lee Creek. Along the trail you will see limestone and cedar glades, three natural bridges, and a magnificent view of the CCC Dam and Lake Devil. The trail is marked with red signs.

Lake Trail (C-2)

Location: 8 miles south of Fayetteville on I-540 (Exit 53), then 18 miles southwest on Hwy. 170, or 7 miles west of I-540 (Exit 45) at Winslow on Hwy. 74

Description: Follow Lee Creek on this gently rolling trail as it makes its way to the marvelous CCC dam that creates Lake Devil. Remnants of the original CCC stone path guide you along this easy shaded hike.

Lee Creek Trail (C-2)

Location: 8 miles south of Fayetteville on I-540 (Exit 53), then 18 miles southwest on Hwy. 170, or 7 miles west of I-540 (Exit 45) at Winslow on Hwy. 74

Description: This loop trail takes hikers up the Lee Creek Valley and returns to the trailhead via the creek bed. Highlights include an abundance of fossils and a seam of coal. The creek bed should be avoided when water is high.

Old Road Trail (C-2)

Description: This trail is named after Highway 170, the original road that the CCC built. This trail follows old Hwy. 170 as it makes its way around the park. The Yellow Rock Trail intersects this trail and gives riders a chance to hitch their horse and see the amazing view from Yellow Rock. The trail is marked with yellow signs

Vista Point Trail (C-2)

Location: 8 miles south of Fayetteville on I-540 (Exit 53), then 18 miles southwest on Hwy. 170, or 7 miles west of I-540 (Exit 45) at Winslow on Hwy. 74

Description: From the horse camp this trail crosses Lee Creek and climbs to the top of Holt Ridge. The highlight of this trail is two overlooks. Vista Point looks out over Blackburn Valley and Holt Ridge Overlook affords riders views of Lee Creek Valley and the park down below. The trail is marked with green signs.

Woody Plant Trail (C-2)

Location: 8 miles south of Fayetteville on I-540 (Exit 53) then 18 miles southwest on Hwy. 170, or 7 miles west of I-540 (Exit 45) at Winslow on Hwy. 74

Description: This short, self-guided trail begins near either bathhouse in Camping Area E and meanders through the woods surrounding the campgrounds. To help visitors learn more about the diversified plant life found in this part of the Ozarks, plants along the trail have been numbered to correspond with an identification sheet which is available at the visitor center.

Yellow Rock Trail (C-2)

Location: 8 miles south of Fayetteville on I-540 (Exit 53), then 18 miles southwest on Hwy. 170, or 7 miles west of I-540 (Exit 45) at Winslow on Hwy. 74

Description: On this trail you will hike 300 feet in elevation to one of the best views in the park. Atop the Yellow Rock you will have an unobstructed view of the Lee Creek valley. Along the rest of the trail you will see cedar glades, interesting rock formations, and the first structure built in the park.
