Film and TV Locations « Back to List North and South, Books I and II (1985) 926 West Washington Street Description This television mini-series saga tells the story of the enduring friendship between Orry Main (Patrick Swayze) of South Carolina and George Hazard (James Read) of Pennsylvania, who become best friends while attending the United States Military Academy at West Point but later find themselves and their families on opposite sides of the war. The slave-owning Mains are rural gentleman planters while the big-city Hazards live by manufacturing and industry, their differences reflecting the divisions between North and South that eventually led to the Civil War. The historic McCollum-Chidester House (photo right), a survivor of the Civil War and now a tour home, was featured in North and South. South Arkansas’s historic Reader Railroad, no longer in operation, and train station near Camden was used in the train scenes. The production company built a whole set at the Reader Railroad location. A private farm in the area was the site of a dueling scene.
