Big Lake (National Wildlife Refuge) includes 11,000-acres of delta lowlands in extreme northeast Arkansas, and offers excellent nature watching the year around. Some 5,000 acres of the refuge is a National Natural Landmark and another 2,100 areas is designated part of the Wilderness Preservation System. Over 2,600 acres are open waters and the remainder is bottomland marsh. Established in 1915, the refuge is home to over 225 species of birds and includes an eagle sanctuary.
