Central High School National Historic Site, Little Rock
Central High School National Historic Site in Little Rock
serves as a symbol of the national struggle over school desegregation.
Here in 1957, the governor of Arkansas attempted to defy federal court
orders by preventing nine African American students from attending Central High School.
President Eisenhower ordered 1200 U.S. Army troops into Little Rock to
protect the civil rights of the students and guard the campus.
Little Rock Central High School, which continues as an active
center of education at Park Street and Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive,
was designated a National Historic Site in 1998. A visitor
center/museum, located in a restored vintage service station, is
