Festivus For the Best of Us Tonight in the Quapaw Quarter

12/11/2012

I’m probably the only person on the planet who didn’t know what this is. I hate to admit it but I had to Google it to find out.  According to Wikipedia, it is “a secular holiday celebrated on December 23 as a way to commemorate the holiday season without participating in its pressures and commercialism. Festivus became part of worldwide popular culture after being featured on an episode of the American TV show Seinfeld in 1997.”

You can join Little Rock’s Quapaw Quarter Association as the organization throws its own Festivus for the Best of Us party tonight at the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion. Hours are 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and tickets for this fundraiser are $35 for association members, $40 for non-members.  Proceeds benefit the historic preservation efforts of the organization.

There is going to be a large silent auction with a wide variety of items, including art, condo stays, getaways, parties, antiques, certificates and more. Works from such artists as John Kushmaul, Richard D’Spain and Betsy Woodyard, plus donations from ZIN, SWAY, The Joint, Loblolly Creamery and others are available for bid.

Also scheduled are some variations of Festivus traditional activities “Airing of Grievances” and “Feats of Strength.”  There will be plenty of appetizers and beverages available.   The Governor’s Mansion is located at 1800 Center Street in downtown Little Rock.
