On the horizon: Outdoor Skills Weekend at Daisy State Park

Daisy State Park in Kirby is located on 7,000-acre Lake Greeson about 50 miles southwest of Hot Springs. The clear lake makes the park a favorite of campers seeking water sports and fishing.
The park is the scene of an annual Outdoor Skills Weekend, which offers a chance to learn about the outdoors via the park’s setting. This year’s event takes place March 3-5. Below is a peek at the schedule as sent by Park Superintendent Tamara Lunsford.
Friday, March 3
- 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Save this Place
Join park interpreters for a free informative discussion about outdoor ethics and learn about the internationally recognized “Leave No Trace” principles. Discover what you can do to make a difference and how to enjoy the outdoors responsibly. Meet at the park Interpretive Center. - 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Meet and Greet Campfire
The park will provide a warm fire with marshmallows to roast and hot chocolate for all park guests. Join park interpreters and gather around the fire to talk about the workshops and programs offered over the weekend. Meet at the park Interpretive Center. - 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Stargazing
Join park interpreters for a free stargazing program to learn about stars, constellations, satellites and the best way to view the night sky. Meet at the park Interpretive Center.
Saturday, March 4
- 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Basic Fishing Techniques
Join park interpreters to learn some of the basic techniques of fishing. The different types of equipment and bait used for fishing will be discussed and supplies will be provided. Participants will receive a starter fishing tackle box. Admission is $15 per person and register at the visitor center by 5 p.m. on Friday March 3. - 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Introduction to Archery Target Shooting
A two-hour program that provides an introduction for anyone interested in learning a new skill. Participants will learn the basics of archery-safety, stances, and proper use of equipment with simple compound bows that are adjustable to each individual’s strength and draw length. This class focuses on group tournament style target archery and is taught by an ANASP Certified Coach. This hands-on program is suitable for ages 8 and up. Admission is $10 per person and those that are interested can register at the visitor center by 5 p.m. - 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Geocaching
Join park interpreters for a geocaching workshop to learn about geocaching, a fun way to explore your surroundings and look for hidden treasures all around you. Admission is $10 and those interested can register at the visitor center by 5 p.m. on Friday March 3. Meet at the park Interpretive Center.
Sunday, March 5
- 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Cast Iron Cookware Workshop
This 2-hour workshop introduces participants to cast iron cooking. The workshop covers topics such as the history of Dutch ovens, maintaining cast-iron, and several delicious recipes. Breakfast will be served during the workshop. Admission is $10 and those interested can register at the visitor center by 5 p.m. Saturday March 4. Meet at the park Interpretive Center. - 12 p.m.-12:30 p.m.
Grand Prize Drawing
The event will draw to a close with a drawing for a grand prize. During each program or workshop participants will be given raffle tickets. At the end of the event a winner will be drawn from the pool of distributed tickets. Workshop participants will receive two tickets per person and free program participants will receive one ticket per person. Meet at the park Interpretive Center.
