Hydroplane Racing on Norfork Lake This Weekend
If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, grab $5, a carload of friends, and head to Norfork Lake in the north-central Arkansas Ozarks.
From noon to 5 p.m. on July 20 and 21 at Pigeon Creek Park on Norfork Lake hydroplanes will be racing across the water. These unique boats, known for their two-cycle motors that create a buzzing sound, reach up to 90 miles an hour.
Participants from 15 states are slated to race. Each race, or heat, will make three laps around the course with a maximum of 12 racers per heat. The last hydroplane races on Lake Norfork took place in the 80’s. Leonard Miller, president of the Oklahoma Boating Association and a key player in getting the races back in the area, expects each driver will enter multiple times, with different boats, offering plenty of exciting entertainment for spectators.
Miller has also donated a Flat Screen TV to be given away Sunday at the races. A drawing for the TV will be held Sunday afternoon. Winner must be present to win. The cost is only $5 per carload, and viewing is available from the shoreline only. Bring your lawn chairs. There will be food for sale.
Pigeon Creek Park is located just Ark. 201 N. For more information, contact the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce at 870-425-5111. You can buy tickets ahead of time or at the gate on race day.
