Northwest Arkansas Mountain Bike Championships Are Saturday
Pedalheads will hit the trails at Devil’s Den State Park in West Fork this weekend, Sept. 14, for the 25th year of mountain biking at the park. It started in 1989 with the first bike event at the park and has become a September tradition. You can help commemorate the event by racing in the Northwest Arkansas Mountain Bike Championships or, at the least, eating cake and ice cream at the Saturday night social.
Saturday’s traditional race starts in Campground A. Trials are Saturday evening near the pool area. Racers and volunteers are eligible to win swag donated by bike shops and businesses that support the event. All events are spectator friendly. There is also a kids’ challenge course and observed trials.
This is a point series event for the Arkansas Mountain Bike Championship Series. The race is USA Cycling sanctioned and USA Cycling rules will be followed. CAT I must have a USA Cycling license to compete and you must have your license at registration. Annual licenses will be sold at registration. CAT 2 and CAT 3 may race with a temporary license for an additional $5. All participants must also hold an AMBCS license, which is $5.
Money and prizes will be divided between the men and women CAT 1 division and CAT 1 trials division. An additional $600 prize money for CAT 1 men and $400 for CAT 1 women has been added. Tailwind Cyclists’ $200 will go to the winners of the women’s and men’s CAT 2 senior division. CAT 1 cash and prizes are based on class size with a 100 percent payback 40 percent deep. See www.ambcs.com for CAT 1 payout. CAT 2 and 3 are awarded three deep.
BMW of Northwest Arkansas, The Friends of Devil’s Den State park Inc., The Bank of Fayetteville, Tailwind Cyclists, Jack and Jo Anne Miller, The Scott/Defoliart Charitble Mountain Bike Fund, and Lindsey & Associates Reality have donated prize money. Arkansas State Parks has donated complimentary cabins and camping accommodations as race prizes.
