11/18/2013

For you runners out there, the Spa 10K takes place in Hot Springs this Saturday (Nov. 23). The race is a popular event in town and is also part of the Arkansas Grand Prix Series. The course takes runners through downtown ( and past landmarks such as Bathhouse Row of Hot Springs National Park), up the winding roads of West Mountain and through the Quapaw-Prospect Historic District. There is also scheduled to be live music along the course. Along with a 10K, there is also a 5K option.

As to a bit about the area, Hot Springs National Park is the smallest and oldest of the parks in the National Park System. It dates back to 1832 when Congress established, 40 years ahead of Yellowstone, the first federally protected area in the nation’s history. Hot Springs Reservation, which was renamed Hot Springs National Park in 1921, was created to protect the 47 naturally flowing thermal springs on the southwestern slope of Hot Springs Mountain.
