You might try planning it around this kids event. The National Park Service offers a Second Saturday program in January, February and March. Just take your kids to the Ponca Elk Education Center located on Ark. 43 at the north end of Boxley Valley at 1 p.m., where they can experience the Buffalo National River during this fun indoor activity highlighting safety in the outdoors. Materials will be provided for kids to make crafts. Plus, they will become a Junior Ranger, receiving their badge and certificate.

This area of The Natural State is beautiful in every season. You can also enjoy wildlife watching, especially the large herd of elk that graze the pastures here. Hiking trails abound.

Jasper has a quaint downtown with unique shopping that includes antiques and art. Don’t miss the great eats in this town either. Between Jasper and Ponca you’ll go through a community called Low Gap. Stop at Low Gap Café for an excellent meal as well.

Lodging is ample for such a rural part of the state. You’ll find houses, cabins, and a motel for rent. Unplug. Enjoy nature. Cozy up to the fireplace of your cabin. Watch movies and play games as a family. Get away. Make memories.
