Lower Delta

Local Favorites

In eastern Arkansas, two natural topographical divisions provide for unique riding experiences in the upper and lower parts of the region — the Gulf Coastal Plain and the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, known as the Delta. Features of the Gulf Coastal Plain include gentle sloping hills and thick forests of loblolly shortleaf pine, while the Alluvial Plain is flatter than any other region in the state and marked by bottomland hardwood forest. Cane Creek State Park in Star City sits on the border of these two areas with great mountain bike riding on a 15 mile singletrack route on the Cane Creek Lake Trail. Though relatively flat and not very technical, the fast, flowy nature of the Cane Creek trail means it’s always worth a ride if you’re in the area.

In Helena-West Helena is Delta Heritage Trail State Park. The site of a former Union Pacific railroad is now open to bikers and hikers and continues to be developed in phases from Lexa to Cypress Bend. When completed, the Delta Heritage Trail will be one of the longest biking and hiking trails in Arkansas, featuring sweeping views from bridges that span the Arkansas River and the White River. While in the Delta, make time for food and fun activities in a place known for its history, culture, music and world-famous barbecue. You can’t go wrong at the James Beard Award-winning Jones’ BBQ Diner in Marianna or Craig’s Brothers Café in DeValls Bluff.
