Bushwhackers and Scallywags at Ozark Folk Center

Jill M. Rohrbach

Learn about Bushwhackers, Scallywags, Jayhawkers and the Yellow Rag Boys on May 29 at the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View. Starting at 7 p.m. that Sunday, you can travel back to the Civil War years between 1861 and 1865 in the Ozark hills along Sylamore creek.

The program is a series of 15 minute programs where you will learn how the families who settled this area dealt with the war. A map and a schedule will guide you on the walking tour through the park village where you encounter costumed interpreters present first-person histories, songs and stories of the war.

At 9 p.m. you are invited to the deck of the Picnic Pavilion to dance old favorites from the era, such as the Virginia Reel, to a live string band. Dances will be taught and led by experienced re-enactors.

This is Memorial Day weekend. So head to the Folk Center for a weekend of fun that includes not only the crafts village, cabins at Dry Creek, and the Skillet Restaurant; but, also the treetop adventure of Loco Ropes.
