It’s almost spring! I just love this time of year, especially in the Arkansas Delta! It’s also a great time to get out and do some birding!

Lake Chicot State Park
in Lake Village is hosting Beaks & Bills, Feathers & Quills on March 11-13. The weekend offers fun (and educational!) activities for the entire family!

The weekend activities start on Friday, March 11 with an early bird lake cruise at 3:30. Participants will cruise on beautiful Lake Chicot, looking for the birds that call the scenic lake home. At 5 p.m. a bald eagle talk will be held at the visitor center. The discussion focuses on the lifestyle and habits of our national symbol. Youngsters attending the program will also make a Bald Eagle puppet to take home.
On Saturday, March 12, the park will host an area-wide bird count around Lake Chicot. The count will be reported to Cornell University’s Lab or Ornithology. Participants are encouraged to note all species spotted from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The day also features an Early Bird Levee Tour, a Backyard Birding program, a discussion on Winter Hummingbirds of Arkansas, a session on how to make your own bird feeder, an Evening Lake Tour, an Owl Pellet Dissection program, and the ever-popular Owl Prowl.

Activities on Sunday, March 13, include a Last Chance Lake Tour, a guided hike on the Delta Woodlands Trail, and a children’s bird craft program.

The park has tours, checklists and maps available for birders during the weekend. To learn more about the Beaks & Bills, Feathers & Quills weekend, contact the park at 870-265-5480.
