My Thursday blogs are all about being Heart Healthy. When the New Year rolled around, I’m sure many of us made a resolution to get fit – to make a change. So let’s do it.

Searching around the internet, I stumbled across a Website that lists hiking retreats by state. There were two for Arkansas: River Spirit Retreat in Parthenon and Azalea Falls Lodge in Kingston. Now I’ve heard of both of these places, but I’ve never been to either one.

River Spirit RetreatRiver Spirit Retreat is a secluded vacation spot nestled in the Ozark Mountains on the Little Buffalo River. The retreat offers hiking trails and private swimming holes on its 117 acres. According to the Website, a guide is available for hiking and exploration in the nearby Ozark National Forest. You can also explore trails and back roads on your mountain bike, take a guided caving expedition, or a horseback riding adventure. River Spirit also provides heart healthy support in the form of guided nature and herb walks, and classes in meditation, yoga, body awareness and stress reduction. The retreat’s founder Ann Lasater, is a licensed massage therapist offering session in massage and a variety of other healing modalities.

Azalea Falls LodgeAzalea Falls Lodge is an Ozark getaway located on the upper Buffalo River. It welcomes vacationers who want a scenic retreat near activities such as canoeing, climbing, hiking and horseback riding. Its 136 acres of woodland paths and canyon trails offer something for the casual stroller or serious hiker. If you want help finding the most spectacular views and rock formations, this property also has a guide service available. In fact, they offer everything from guided hikes to full ecotours.

Both of these properties are suited for individuals, couples or groups. So if you’re looking for a vacation or weekend getaway with plenty of opportunities to be active, these hiking retreats are worth considering.
