Heart Healthy: Wine Country Bike Tour

My Thursday blogs are all about being Heart Healthy. When the New Year rolled around, I’m sure many of us made a resolution to get fit – to make a change. So let’s do it.

Okay, I admit that there is no way I could jump on my bike and make any of these runs. But for those of you who can, or who can push yourself to try, head to the Arkansas River Valley the first of May. The 8th annual Wine Country Bike Tour on May 1 offers several routes – 17 miles, 35 miles, 100K, 80 miles, and 100 miles. The tour begins and ends at Post Familie Vineyards and Winery in Altus. Post offers participants refreshments after the rides. The entry fee is $40 with online registration and $45 the day of the event. Register at http://www.active.com/cycling/altus-ar/arkansas-wine-country-bike-tour-2010, where you can also find race details and route maps. Online registrations closes tomorrow.
This event is managed by the Arkansas River Valley Circle of Friends Chapter of Arkansas Children’s Hospital. All proceeds benefit ACH. Call 479-880-7193 for more information.

While you’re there, enjoy the 32nd annual Altus Springtime Gala. Also on May 1, this annual event is packed with activities that also include heart healthy opportunities. In addition to the bike tour, another sporting event associated with the gala is a 5K Run & Fun Walk. There will also be arts and crafts, kids’ rides and attractions, flea market, music, games, 105th Army Band, Lawbreakers & Peacemakers Old West shoot out, prince and princess contests, and an antique and classic car and truck show. Phone 479-468-4191 for more information.
