Attention all you budding Rube Goldberg’s, engineers and designers. On Saturday you have a chance to test your skills during the Hostel Hose Down in Little Rock. Get a team together, and for a $20 entry free, you can participate. Your challenge is this: come up with some type of packaging to keep a watermelon intact when dropped from a 100-foot fire truck ladder. The watermelon that doesn’t bust and comes closest to a designated target on ground, and the one with the best protection design, will be among the winning entries. You must pre-register to take part and can do so online.
Other attractions include a bounce house for kids, a rock climbing wall, carnival foods such as hot dogs, cotton candy and snow cones, and a reverse dunk tank. Firefighter demonstrations and activities, a fire truck display, and bingo are also a part of the fun. General admission is free but there are charges for activities. Hours are 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Arkansas Firehouse Hostel and Museum, located next to the Arkansas Arts Center in MacArthur Park in downtown Little Rock. Proceeds benefit the hostel and museum which is scheduled to open later this year in the 1917 Little Rock Fire Company No. 2 building.
