Hot Springs Hosts World’s Shortest St Patrick’s Day Parade and Valley of the Vapors Music Festival

again, the First Ever 9th annual World’s Shortest Saint Patrick’s Day Parade
has been set for March 17 (this Saturday) in Hot Springs.

The event
has been harnessing a lot of press since it was created nine years ago. Last
year, the parade was featured on CNN as one of three showcased “Quirky St.
Patrick’s Day’ destinations.

This year
it was listed by U.S. News  as #8
in a Top 10 Parades in America article. The
parade, which has grown to attract more than 30,000 revelers, takes place on
the legendary 98-foot-long Bridge Street downtown. A highlight of the parade is
always the grand marshal. This year’s marshal is set to be Tim Matheson, who
played Otter in the comedy “Animal House”.

The next
day in town ( March 18) marks the start of the Valley of the Vapors Independent
Music Festival which lasts through the 24th.  The  festival is
a nice stop to those who might be traveling from the SXSW Conference in
Austin, TX or for anyone into independent music. The small venue festival is
held at the Low Key Arts building and hosts a range of bands (more than three
dozen groups) and international acts as well. For a look at the lineup, visit Robert Bell over at the Arkansas Times also wrote a great primer on the festival. His article can be found here.
