Oaklawn Jockeys

Zoie Clift

Well, it’s raining today so I thought it’d be a good chance
to recap the weekend and the beautiful weather we had. My cousin from Greece is
still in town and I spent Saturday showing her a few landmarks of Hot Springs
such as Oaklawn.
It was her first time to see live Thoroughbred horse racing and like me,
she was fascinated by the horses yes, but also by the jockeys. To me, watching
these athletes on the track and behind the scenes is a main draw of the races.
Seeing them at Oaklawn sparked an interest in learning more about their life so
I’m now in the midst of watching the series Jockeys on Netflix. It centers on
life at the Santa Anita track in California and includes scenes of hall of
famers like Mike Smith, of Zenyatta fame. The legendary horse ( she won 19 consecutive races in a 20 race career earning her the 2010 Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year)  won the Apple Blossom Invitational at Oaklawn last April and is considered one of racing’s all time greats. The series offers quick peeks
into the jockeys lives and I imagine the
same daily dramas take place behind the scenes at Oaklawn. For a list of
current Oaklawn jockeys and their
bios, check out this link. I am also including a few shots I took of last weekend’s sunny race to counter today’s rainy day. If
you’ve yet to catch a race, there are still a few more months to catch the
jockeys and horses in action. Live racing goes until April 16.  Post times on weekdays and Sunday is at
1:30 and 1 on Saturday. See you there!
