“Plan-Ahead Event” blogs are posted early in the week and feature events and festivals that are popular or unique…and give readers plenty of time to make plans to attend!

The weather has been amazing in the Arkansas Delta lately, and this upcoming weekend promises to be more of the same! Ready to get outdoors? Then you are in luck, my friends! These three events get you outside and let you enjoy the beauty of the Arkansas Delta.

Enjoy a morning of fishing with your young angler at the Junior Fishing Derby at Cane Creek State Park in Star City on March 26. Youngsters ages 15 and under will compete for small prizes. Bring your pole for a morning filled with fun! The fishing derby starts at 8 a.m. and participants will meet at the park’s visitors center. For more information, visit or phone 870-628-4714.

The Delta Heritage Trail State Park near Helena-West Helena is offering another of their popular Bike and Kayak tours. The tour is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Delta Heritage Trail. The bikes and kayaks will be provided. The bike ride consists of a 10-mile ride through the native hardwoods, along beautiful farmland, and across several streams. Upon arrival in Lakeview, participants take to their kayaks and explore Old Town Lake, an oxbow lake filled with striking cypress trees. After the kayak tour of Old Town Lake, tour participants will be transported back to the park office in Barton. The tour lasts approximately four hours. Reservations are required and the cost is $25 for adults and $15 for those ages 12 and under and includes the bike, kayak, life jackets, paddles, and the shuttle. For more information, call the park at 870-572-2352.

Want to learn more about geocaching? Village Creek State Park in Wynne hosts a Geocaching 101 workshop on March 26. Learn the basics of geocaching, including how to use a GPS to find a cache, trackable items such as travel bugs and geocoins and tips to make caching an enjoyable activity for the entire family. Contact Village Creek State Park at 870-238-9406 for more information or to register for the free workshop.

Have a great week!
