This year’s Hot Springs Fishing Challenge has started! The event was created to bring attention to the fishing available in Arkansas and has been taking place for the past seven years. The challenge stays open through July 31.
As to details, 71 tagged fish were released by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission into Lake Catherine and Lake Hamilton that represent a variety of species to catch, including largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, white bass, crappie, and walleye. The Challenge provides anglers the opportunity to catch tagged fish that can be redeemed for cash prizes. If you catch a tagged fish, it will have a phone number to call and a prize number on it. Overall, the total prize pool is $101,000 and those interested in taking part need a valid fishing license to do so.
There is also one special fish that is being released, and the payout for catching this top fish, known as “Big Al,” is a payout of $15,000. Last year marked the first time this top prize fish has ever been caught. Clues will be given out during June and July about “Big Al” if the fish has not been caught by then this go around.
“Hot Springs residents and visitors coming to Hot Springs from throughout the nation have told us this is their favorite time of year,” said Steve Arrison CEO of Visit Hot Springs via a news release. “Many people have told us they had an exciting time on the lakes trying to land one of the prize fish, even if they haven’t yet hit the cash jackpot.”
