As a child growing up internationally in places like her home country of Liberia and in Canada, the state of Arkansas wasn’t even on fashion designer Korto Momolu’s radar. That was until she met her husband, Benny, who was a native of The Natural State. When he moved home after leaving the military, she followed. And she’s glad she did.
“The more I stayed [here], the more I met people who were very much like me, and I was able to kind of open up this whole fashion thing that I wanted to do,” Momolu said. Her stellar design skills were showcased on season five of “Project Runway” and most recently on “Project Runway: All Stars.” Her beautiful work can be found on the catwalk during New York Fashion Week, in various boutiques around central Arkansas and too many other places to name. Momolu also designed the staff uniforms for the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville.
While Little Rock has become an optimal spot for the designer to thrive in her chosen profession, it’s the family atmosphere of the area that really stands out. For the mother of two – she has a 9-year-old daughter Alyse and a newborn baby boy, Cameron – it’s an important part of life.
“I understand why I’m here and why I was brought here,” she said.
