Tinker Time- Danger in the Oil Field

Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources

What to know

What is a walking beam? What is a Samson post? Let’s find out the answers to these questions at the Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources. The 1920s oil boom brought not only change and new opportunities to south Arkansas, but also danger and even some destruction. Come to the museum and explore the Oil Field Park with an interpreter, as we see some of the different machines that made the search for oil in south Arkansas possible. Learn about the dangers confronted everyday by oil field workers known as roughnecks, and how they struggled to find black gold. Then, construct your own two-dimensional model of an oil pump using cardstock and other supplied materials.
