While camped near Old Austin in 1862, a large group of Texas and Arkansas Confederate soldiers were overcome by an epidemic of typhoid and black measles, causing the deaths of approximately 1,500. In 1907, the remains were moved to this historic cemetery; one of a small number of all-Confederate cemeteries in Arkansas; listed on the National Register of Historic Places
