Fishing Fun in May

May is a great time to get the kids, grab a fishing pole and head to the water. Three of the Arkansas State Parks in the Arkansas Delta are hosting special fishing events this month just for the youngsters.

Lake Poinsett State Park in Harrisburg offers a Kid’s Fishing Derby at the park on May 9. Anglers 12 years and under are invited to try and catch the big one. Park personnel will be on hand to help the youngsters with untangling lines and tying hooks. 

May 9 is the date for Reelin’ on the Ridge Kids Fishing Derby at Village Creek State Park in Wynne. Children ages 15 and under can fish in a small pond that’s been stocked with catfish by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. A variety of prizes will be given in several different categories, such as biggest fish and most fish caught. 

Crowley’s Ridge State Park in Paragould invites those 15 years old and younger to put their fishing skills to the test at the Fishing on the Ridge Derby on May 23. Lake Walcott was stocked with hundreds of catfish courtesy of the Arkansas Game and Fish. Young anglers should bring their own fishing pole, tackle and bait. Prizes will be awarded in several categories and age groups throughout the event.
