Say farewell to the hang gliding season at the 19th annual End of Summer Hang Glider Fly In on Aug. 24-25 at Mount Nebo State Park in Dardanelle.

Even if you don’t hang glide, it’s fun to watch them set up their equipment

You can ask them questions and take pictures as you watch them fly through the air from the Mount Nebo peak. Admission is free. Due to the sport’s high dependence on wind and weather, no flight times are announced; but, weather permitting, the pilots will fly on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Rising 1,350 feet, Mount Nebo offers sweeping views of the Arkansas River Valley. In the 30s, native stone and logs from Mount Nebo were used by the Civilian Conservation Corps to construct many of the park’s bridges, trails, rustic-style cabins, and pavilions.

The park offers 34 campsites (24 Class B; 10 Hike-in Tent Sites) [no dump station] and 14 fully-equipped cabins with kitchens. Mount Nebo State Park also features 14 comfortable cabins with fully-equipped kitchens and fireplaces. Fourteen miles of trails encircle Mount Nebo. Hike or bike the trails. You can bring your own bike or rent one from the park visitor center.

Park facilities include a pool, tennis courts, picnic areas, playgrounds, extra-large enclosed and standard open pavilions and a ball field. The visitor center offers exhibits, a store and bicycle rentals. Interpretive programs tell about the mountain’s history and natural resources.

Mount Nebo State Park is one of two state parks offering launch sites for hang gliding enthusiasts.

The other park is Mount Magazine State Park located high atop Arkansas’s highest mountain, Mount Magazine at 2,753 feet, near Paris.
