Fire Starting

Mississippi River State Park

What to know

For some people, building a fire means piling a bunch of logs together, pouring on lots of lighter fluid and throwing a match on the whole thing. But if you build your fire correctly, not only can you get rid of that lighter fluid; you might also be able to start it without a match or butane lighter. Join a park interpreter to try your hand at starting a fire using traditional methods such as bow drills, flint and steel, or even a Fresnel lens while learning about the importance of tinder and other subtleties of campfire construction.
