Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources Special Exhibit
Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources
What to know
The Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources tells the story of the 1920s oil boom with its artifacts, which highlight the lives and culture of the people who lived during this important time in south Arkansas. In the days before electric lights, during the 1920s people depended on kerosene lanterns to light their homes, businesses, and outside activities. On the railroads, lanterns such as the Yellow Dog Lantern served an especially important purpose for lighting the way for safety of the oilfield workers.
Can you imagine what life would have been like in south Arkansas during the 1920s, if there had been no lanterns? Come to the museum and see two unique artifacts on display that were used to light the way for the people of south Arkansas. And just for curiosity sake find out where the name Yellow Dog Lantern came from.
