Introduction to 1920s Fans

Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources

What to know

Think of the summertime and how hot the temperature gets in south Arkansas. What to do to get relief from the heat? Today, we can turn on the air conditioner and
fans. However back in the 1920s, people did not yet have air conditioners, but only the newly invented electric fan. Come to the museum to see photos of an original fan from that time period, which you can then view after the program in the lease office of the museum's Boomtown Street exhibit gallery. Learn how these fans became a popular item in many homes and businesses during the 1920s south Arkansas oil boom. You will also make your own hand-held fan. Afterwards, you can tour the Boomtown Street exhibit to see what life was like during the oil boom.

COVID-19 safety guidelines are in effect for guest and staff safety. Space will be limited. Please call (870) 725-2877 to reserve your spot. Registration for this program is required due to a limited space of 20 participants. In the event that this program reaches capacity, self-guided activities, such as scavenger hunts, will be available.
