Paddle a kayak along the shoreline and explore quiet coves during Kayak Lake Tour August 1 in Bismarck at DeGray Lake Resort State Park. Sign up early for this guided kayak tour. Flatwater kayaks, paddles, and lifejackets are provided and no previous paddling experience is necessary. Be prepared to paddle around 2 miles (1 ½ hours). Starting at 9 a.m., a guide demonstrates the basics of kayaking and answers nature questions along the way. Participants must be 10 years old to paddle a boat solo. There is limited space available for children age 9 and under to ride with an adult. Reservations are required and may be made at the marina beginning at noon the day before by calling 501-865-5840. The cost of the tour is $10 per paddler and $5 per child riding with an adult. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet. For more information visit www.degray.com or call 501-865-5810.

The 38th annual Pine Tree Festival is August 6-7 and features a parade, car show, games for kids, a contest saluting the timber industry and a concert by The Marshall Tucker Band. The festival takes place at Dierks City Park. Located in central Howard County in southwestern Arkansas, Dierks is a town with origins linked to the emergence of the state's lumber industry. Round-um up cowboy! August 12-14 hosts the Polk County Rodeo at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Mena. Bucking horses and bucking bulls add excitement to this traditional style rodeo. True West is playing at the Pocket Community Theatre August 12-15 in Hot Springs. The play is about what happens when sons of a desert dwelling alcoholic and a suburban wanderer clash. Austin, the achiever, is working on a film script he has sold to producer Sal Kimmer when Lee, a petty thief, drops in. He pitches his own idea for a movie to Kimmer, who then wants Austin to junk his love story and write Lee's Western tale. The play is a Sam Shepard American classic and performances are held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The theatre is located at 170 Ravine Street and admission is $8 and $5 for students. The 14th annual DeGray Lake Tri Fest is August 14-15 in Arkadelphia. The DeGray Lake triathlons are among the longest running triathlons in the state. The Tri Arkansas International distance is on the 14th and the DeGray Lake Sprint Triathlon is on the 15th. The international distance is a 1500 meter-swim, 39K bike, and 10K run. The sprint race consists of a 500-meter lake swim, 15-mile bike ride, and a 3.2-mile run. The festival is at the Spillway Area at DeGray Lake.
