Jazz trumpet sensation Chris Botti is scheduled to perform in downtown Texarkana Jan. 10 at the historic Perot Theatre.
The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. and is being presented by the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council, Inc.
Botti credits his evolving style to Miles Davis playing ballads with the second Quintet. “My music is more reined-in, because it's in a pop format” he has said. “But this atmospheric quality is what I really loved about jazz, and I've tried to marry that feel to the textures and melodies you might hear on a record by Peter Gabriel or Bryan Ferry.”
A native of Portland, Ore. his earliest musical influence was his mother, a classically trained pianist and part-time piano teacher. He still composes primarily on the piano before transferring to trumpet.
Botti is not only a gifted instrumentalist, he's also a composer and charismatic performer deemed “a breakout musical star" by the Los Angeles Times. The trumpeter has worked extensively with such leading singers and songwriters as Marc Cohn, Joni Mitchel and Natalie Merchant. His musical style has been described as lush and evocative and he was among People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful" last year.
His gold certified album When I Fall In Love was followed by the Grammy winning To Love Again, a collection of pop jazz standards with nine guest superstar vocalists including Sting, Paula Cole, Michael Bublé, Jill Scott, Gladys Knight and Steven Tyler.
He also has worked on a number of versatile projects such as appearing on the PBS special The Legends of Jazz and working with Lyle Lovett on the soundtrack of the film Everyone's Hero.
Botti agreed to return for a special one-night-appearance at the theater after being pulled from the ’05 season to entertain investors of SONY. Ticket prices range from $40- $6 with group and half-price student discounts available. Those interested can buy tickets online anytime at trahc.org or call (903) 792- 4992 Monday-Friday from 10-5 p.m. More about the musician can be found at http://www.chrisbotti.com/
