The largest annual motorcycle rally in central Arkansas is Sept. 9-12 in Hot Springs at the 5th annual Hot Springs Rally. The rally is at the Hot Springs Convention Center. Join amateur "ham" radio operators from the four-state area of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee to swap equipment and information related to this method of emergency communication at Hamfest Sept.10-11 in Mena at Queen Wilhelmina State Park. The 22nd annual MountainFest is Sept. 10-11 in Mena. At the festival, folks gather from all walks of life to visit and shop with vendors and listen to live entertainment. The 3rd annual Antique Motorcycles in the Park is Sept. 11 in Hot Springs. Check out over 100 antique and vintage pre-1980 motorcycles on display and learn about motorcycle history. Celebrate National Public Lands Day a little early at the Hook, Line & Sinker Fishing Derby in Bismarck Sept. 11. During the free derby, Golf Course Pond #7 at DeGray Lake Resort State Park is stocked with hundreds of catfish for participants to reel in. There are no age restrictions on the fishing but participants age 16 and over must have a valid Arkansas fishing license (available for sale at the park marina). Bring lawn chairs, drinking water, and your own bait and tackle. The derby is co-sponsored by Southern Bancorp and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. The Motorcycle Cannonball Run is scheduled to take a large group of riders 3,325 miles across America starting at Kitty Hawk, N.C. and ending (14 days later) in Santa Monica, CA. The ride begins on Sept. 10 and Hot Springs will host the riders Sept. 16-18. If you are a gear head, one thing to note is that all the motorcycles taking part in the ride will be pre-1916 vintage classic machines, a requirement of the ride. Riders are also scheduled to use backroads and byways as their main route of travel. The classic motorcycles will be stored at the Hot Springs Convention Center during the pit stop in town. The Great Arkansas Clean-up is Sept. 18 in Mountain Pine at Lake Ouachita State Park. The event is the park's annual fall park and lake clean-up that focuses on the shoreline and roadways around the park. After the event, the park provides a special treat for all the volunteers. Hot Springs hosts the Legends Balloon Rally Sept. 24-25 at the Memorial Field Airport. On Friday and Saturday evening balloons from all over the country are tethered to the ground for the balloon glow. The flickering glow of each balloon creates a beautiful display in the evening light. There are also balloon launches and balloons are piloted by veteran balloonists with no less than 300 hours experience.
